🌍 ERATOSTHENES CoE at the 9th CAMS General Assembly

Our team, represented by Dr.Silas Mixailidis and Orestis Livadiotis at Prague, 3-5 of September 2025, participated in the 9th Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) General Assembly, which brought together scientists, policymakers, and service providers to discuss the latest developments in atmospheric monitoring and forecasting.

Key take-home points from the Assembly include:

  • Policy relevance of air quality forecasts: New tools and services were showcased to support European and national authorities in addressing particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) and reactive gases, with an emphasis on linking forecasts more closely to health and climate policies.

  • Advances in emissions and flux monitoring: Progress was presented on monitoring greenhouse gas fluxes, methane hotspots, and integrating CAMS data into the upcoming CO2 Monitoring and Verification Support (CO2MVS) system.

  • Regional vs. global services: Sessions highlighted improvements in both regional air quality models and global aerosol/greenhouse gas monitoring, underlining their complementarity for applications ranging from urban policy to climate reporting.

  • Future of CAMS (CAMS3): Looking ahead, the service will focus on enhancing data quality, increasing accessibility for diverse user communities, and strengthening connections with health, energy, and environmental sectors.

For Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, these developments are especially relevant: particulate matter episodes, dust transport, and industrial emissions remain pressing challenges, and CAMS tools offer opportunities to better inform local stakeholders, decision-makers, and the public.
