We had the opportunity to attend the 5th ECMWF\u2013ESA Machine Learning Workshop<\/strong> at the DAMA Technopole in Bologna \u2014 a key event at the intersection of AI, Earth Observation, and climate science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A highlight of the experience was participating in a guided visit to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts<\/span><\/span> (ECMWF)<\/strong> infrastructure, where we explored the high-performance computing systems that support operational weather and climate prediction. Seeing these systems up close gave valuable insight into the scale and complexity behind modern forecasting.<\/p>\n

\n

\ud83c\udfaf Workshop motivation and scope<\/h3>\n

The workshop focused on the rapidly growing role of Machine Learning (ML)<\/strong> in Earth System Observation and Prediction (ESOP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ML is now transforming the field:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • From supporting tools \u2192 to end-to-end data-driven forecasting systems<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • From research concepts \u2192 to operational applications<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    At the same time, important challenges remain:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • How far can purely data-driven models<\/strong> go without physics?<\/li>\n
    • How to best combine ML with physical models<\/strong> for reliable predictions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In parallel, the field is evolving technologically:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Transition from CPU \u2192 GPU\/TPU-based HPC systems<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Emerging paradigms like quantum, edge, and neuromorphic computing<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n

        \ud83e\udde0 Key thematic areas<\/h3>\n

        The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • Hybrid ML\u2013physics systems<\/strong> for weather and climate prediction<\/li>\n
        • End-to-end ML frameworks<\/strong> for forecasting<\/li>\n
        • ML applications for Earth Observation data<\/strong><\/li>\n
        • High-performance computing<\/strong> and next-generation architectures<\/li>\n
        • Machine learning for Digital Twins of the Earth system<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The programme provided a comprehensive snapshot of the state of the art, combining keynotes, technical sessions, and discussions across the ESOP community<\/p>\n

          \ud83d\ude80 Impact for our work<\/h3>\n

          Beyond the technical content, the workshop was highly motivational<\/strong>. It reinforced the importance of:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • Developing AI-based downscaling approaches<\/strong><\/li>\n
          • Combining CAMS, satellite, and in-situ data<\/strong><\/li>\n
          • Moving towards impact-driven applications<\/strong> (e.g. health, environment, policy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            This experience strongly motivates us to push forward and deliver high-quality, innovative solutions<\/strong> within our projects at the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
