One of the most visible\u2014and increasingly frequent\u2014consequences is the <strong data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"899\">marine heatwave<\/strong>. In the Mediterranean, these events are becoming more intense, longer-lasting, and more widespread, raising serious concerns for ecosystems, coastal communities, and weather patterns across the region. This article explains what marine heatwaves are, how they affect the Mediterranean and Cyprus, and how satellite data from <strong data-start=\"1226\" data-end=\"1243\">Copernicus EU<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1307\">ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence<\/strong> are helping us track and understand them.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"seirvs\" data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"1982\">Why the Mediterranean Is a Hotspot<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"2156\">The Mediterranean is warming <strong data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2027\">20% faster<\/strong> than the global ocean average, making it a <strong data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2097\">climate change hotspot<\/strong> according to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/help\/glossary\/eea-glossary\/ipcc\">IPCC<\/a> <\/strong>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\">European Environment Agency<\/a>. Several factors contribute to this:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2194\" data-end=\"2430\">\n<li data-start=\"2194\" data-end=\"2260\">\n<p data-start=\"2196\" data-end=\"2260\"><strong data-start=\"2196\" data-end=\"2222\">Limited water exchange<\/strong> with the Atlantic slows down cooling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2261\" data-end=\"2334\">\n<p data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2334\"><strong data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2311\">Intense summer heat and prolonged dry spells<\/strong> contribute to warming.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2335\" data-end=\"2430\">\n<p data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2430\"><strong data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2378\">Smaller scale and complex circulation<\/strong> make the sea more sensitive to atmospheric changes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2563\">Because of these factors, marine heatwaves in the Mediterranean are both more likely and more impactful than in many other regions.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2563\">Environmental and Ecological Impacts<\/h3>\n<p>Marine heatwaves are currently posing a significant threat to underwater ecosystems, demanding immediate attention and action. Elevated temperatures can lead to mass die-offs of fish, shellfish, seagrasses, and corals\u2014species that are highly sensitive to temperature change. These warmer conditions disrupt reproduction and migration cycles, ultimately reducing biodiversity resilience. Furthermore, thermal stress, which occurs when organisms experience temperatures outside their normal range, creates an environment where invasive species thrive. These invaders can outcompete native marine life, further destabilizing ecosystems. Warmer water also holds less oxygen, leading to hypoxia, which challenges marine organisms&#8217; survival. The impacts of these changes have avalanche effects throughout interconnected food chains, ultimately affecting not only marine life but also fisheries, tourism, and coastal livelihoods. Immediate action is essential to address and mitigate these urgent threats to our oceans.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"nqjkkx\" data-start=\"3201\" data-end=\"3246\">Broader Effects on Climate and Society<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3248\" data-end=\"3320\">Marine heatwaves don\u2019t just affect life underwater. They also influence:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3321\" data-end=\"3791\">\n<li data-start=\"3321\" data-end=\"3477\">\n<p data-start=\"3323\" data-end=\"3477\"><strong data-start=\"3323\" data-end=\"3343\">Weather patterns<\/strong>: Warmer sea surfaces release more moisture into the atmosphere, potentially intensifying storms, flash floods, and heatwaves on land.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3478\" data-end=\"3649\">\n<p data-start=\"3480\" data-end=\"3649\"><strong data-start=\"3480\" data-end=\"3496\">UV radiation<\/strong>: Prolonged high-pressure systems linked to ocean warming can lead to elevated <strong data-start=\"3575\" data-end=\"3594\">UV index levels<\/strong>, increasing health risks like sunburn and skin damage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3650\" data-end=\"3791\">\n<p data-start=\"3652\" data-end=\"3791\"><strong data-start=\"3652\" data-end=\"3669\">Wildfire risk<\/strong>: Heatwaves over land often coincide with marine heatwaves, increasing vegetation dryness and the potential for wildfires.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"3904\">In coastal regions like Cyprus, these effects combine to stress both natural systems and public infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"rorb51\" data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1199\">Monitoring Marine Heatwaves with Copernicus and ERATOSTHENES<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1240\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">The <strong data-start=\"4\" data-end=\"64\">Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS)<\/strong> offers <strong data-start=\"72\" data-end=\"96\">free and open-access<\/strong> data to track sea surface temperature anomalies in near real time. These datasets support long-term monitoring and early detection of marine heatwaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1242\" data-end=\"1281\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">At the <strong data-start=\"7\" data-end=\"76\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eratosthenes.org.cy\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-start=\"9\" data-end=\"74\" data-is-only-node=\"\">ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence<\/a><\/strong>, we leverage CMEMS products to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1408\">\n<li data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1324\">\n<p data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1324\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Monitor current and historic <strong data-start=\"29\" data-end=\"43\">SST trends<\/strong> in the eastern Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1325\" data-end=\"1366\">\n<p data-start=\"1327\" data-end=\"1366\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Support <strong data-start=\"8\" data-end=\"36\">climate risk assessments<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"41\" data-end=\"74\">coastal resilience strategies<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1408\">\n<p data-start=\"1369\" data-end=\"1408\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Inform policy and decision\u2011making through European initiatives like <strong data-start=\"68\" data-end=\"81\">EXCELSIOR<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"90\" data-end=\"131\">CAMS National Collaboration Programme<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1449\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">By integrating these insights, Cyprus strengthens its ability to anticipate and respond to climate-driven marine hazards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1449\">Learn more:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1449\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eratosthenes.org.cy\/worrying-increase-in-sea-temperatures-in-the-mediterranean-according-to-copernicus-eu-data\/\">Worrying Increase in Sea Temperatures in the Mediterranean \u2013 According to Copernicus EU Data &#8211; ERATOSTHENES CoE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the climate continues to warm, the oceans are absorbing the majority of the excess heat trapped in the Earth&#8217;s system.
